The largest internet encyclopedia, Wikipedia, intends to apply for the UNESCO list of World Heritage. Launched the petition, which claims that Wikipedia provides a better understanding and communication between people.
The people behind this project hope that a petition will have a great success, given the fact that over four million visitors a day use the services of the internet encyclopaedia. The intention is that Wikipedia becomes “the first digital world heritage”.
According to Katrin Schonevil, representatives of the German Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia meets the most important criterion.
“Wikipedia is a masterpiece of human achievement. Wikipedia is more than just web pages. Many think only of internet and technology. Wikipedia is actually the subject of culture, a new way of learning. The old idea of humanity, knowledge acquisition, transfer is now in the digital age”, she told the German state radio Deustch Welle.
Judging from the reactions of the UNESCO, the ambition is not likely to happen.
“The idea that the well-known internet encyclopedia inscribed in the List of World Heritage is not realistic”, says a representative of the German Commission for UNESCO, Dieter Ofenheuser. “Wikipedia is not an option. World Heritage List is intended for buildings, pyramids, historic city centers, natural areas, cathedrals and so on, but it is not intended for such ideas”.
“We look with much sympathy on Wikipedia. As a completely new kind of international libraries, it in itself is something very unique. Wikipedia is a magnificent idea that changed the world. They could enter the program with similar documents”, said the Ofenheuser.
